Bear Reportedly Seen in Surry County

A black bear was spotted in the Flat Rock community on Eaton Street at about 12 p.m. Thursday, according to the Mount Airy News.

Sheltontown resident Pat Austin said she spotted the bear as she pulled up to her sister's home. She said it was about five or six feet away from her car when she stopped.

Austin said the bear was last headed toward Linville Road. It was estimated to weigh about 250 to 300 pounds.

Large Taxidermy Event Coming to SCC

A large three-day taxidermy conference is coming to Surry Community College this week, according to the Mount Airy News,

The annual Taxidermy Mini-Course takes place from Thursday to Saturday at various locations on the college's Dobson campus.

The event will offer learning opportunities for beginner and advanced taxidermists, the paper reported.

It will also showcase taxidermy competition entries to the general public.

The event will also include more than 33 seminars taught by some of the nation’s top taxidermists along, the paper reported.

The registration fee is $66. Taxidermy is the act of mounting or reproducing dead animals for display

Mosquito Control Franchise Claims to Serve the Triad

A new mosquito control franchise called Mosquito Squad of the Triad has opened in Winston-Salem.

The franchise is owned by Hugh Jones.

Jones said he expanded his Mosquito Squad of Greensboro location to service the rest of the Triad area including Winston-Salem and High Point.

Mosquito Squad mosquito control is North America's fastest growing outdoor living concept franchise, according to a press release.

Mosquito Squad mosquito control claims to offer affordable, dependable and effective protection against mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry.

The service will serve the central North Carolina from Graham to Lewisville, from Eden to Asheboro and points between, the press release stated.

Services they offer include 21-day Barrier Spray, which kills on contact and continues for three weeks and 14-day All-Natural Spray, which kills adult mosquitoes on contact and has a two-week repellent effect.

Horsemanship Seminar Takes Place Saturday in Westfield

A horsemanship seminar takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Heavenly Way Retreat and Training Center at 2330 Simmons Road in Westfield.

Participants will learn horseback riding from a real "horse whisper," according to a press release.

The session will be taught by Al Trippe, who has been handling and riding horses since he was born in 1934, the press release stated.

Heavenly Way is a 200 acre training center near Hanging Rock State Park. A lodge, round pen, brand new arena and miles of riding trails will be provided.

The event costs $55 and lunch is provided.

The Surry County Animal Shelter saw a slight decrease in the number of euthanizations and an increase in pet vaccinations last year according to a report in the Mount Airy News.
