The Tour de Gaps annual bicycling event takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday at 8 a.m. at Westwood Park in Mount Airy.

The event is a charity bicycle ride with the option of climbing up four of the gaps to the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to the Mount Airy News.

Both 50- and 82-mile routes are available, the paper reported. The long route includes Squirrel Spur, Willis Gap, Orchard Gap and Pipers Gap.

The cyclist climbs up each gap road and returns back down the same route to the rolling terrain of the foothills.

Officials say more than 200 people are expected to participate. Proceeds will benefit charities including the Surry Medical Ministries.

Registration is done at www.tourdegaps.com for $35 through Tuesday. The early registration fee includes a shirt and goodie bag.

Registration also will be available at Westwood Park on the morning of the event for a $40 fee, the paper reported.

Mount Airy Receives Grant to Establish Bicycle Lanes

Mount Airy has received state transportation funding to help make the city more bike- and pedestrian-friendly, according to the Mount Airy News.

Officials said the municipality has recently qualified for a $22,050 bicycle and pedestrian planning grant through a branch of the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The city applied for the funding last year. The money will also be combined with about $9,000 from the locality, the paper reported.

It will help provide a master plan to help Mount Airy identify bike or pedestrian needs, priorities and opportunities for improvements.

The plan will chart a course for the next 25 years and pinpoint where bike lanes should be established.

Supporters say they want bike lanes to take them to locations including shopping areas, the library and movie theater.

A private consulting company will be hired to head the study. The project is expected to be put out for bids later this summer.

Pilot Mountain Delays Gun Shop Decision

Pilot Mountain Delays Gun Shop Decision

The Pilot Mountain Board of Commissioners has voted to delay making a decision on a gun shop opening in Pilot Mountain.

The proposed shop is planned to be at the old Lowe's Jewelry store on Main Street, according to the Mount Airy News.

Commissioners want time to gain more information on the matter before voting, the paper reported.

The board would have to approve an ordinance that would allow gunsmiths and licensed firearms dealers in the general business and central business districts.

The central business district includes the businesses on Main Street, while the general business district is anything in city limits that is not on Main Street, other than residential zoning areas.

The motion passed unanimously to table the matter until the next meeting.

Movie Shot in Triad Now Playing

Movie Shot in Triad Now Playing

"The 5th Quarter," which was shot and based in the Triad, is now playing in theatres across the southeast region.

The movie was filmed in Forsyth, Guiford, Davie and Davidson Counties in 2008.

It is based on the true story of Jon Abbate who helped lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to the most successful season in school history.

The victory came after the death of Abbate's 15-year-old brother. Abbate dedicated the season to his brother's memory and changed his jersey number to honor him.

The Piedmont Triad Film Commission helped Director Rick Bieber find local crew, resources and locations so the entire story could be filmed in the region.

The movie stars Ryan Merriman, Aidan Quinn and Andie MacDowell.

Proposed Sports Facility Could Generate $3.7M Annually

A proposed facility in Mount Airy to host major sports tournaments could generate an estimated $3.7 million annually in revenue, according to a recent economic-impact study.

The Small Business Center of Surry Community College report also states that most the spending would be at hotels and national chains, according to the Mount Airy News.

“Large amounts of the dollars spent may not be retained in the local economy except to employ seasonal, minimum-wage workers,” it states, according to the paper.

The economic-impact study was launched late last year by the Mount Airy Sports Development Committee.

It is estimated that the proposed facility would cost $4.8 million to $7.6 million to build, according to the paper.
