Surry Community College to Host Event Offering Business Tips

Surry Community College will host an event on how businesses can create a memorable experience for customers on Tuesday.

The free event takes place from 6–8:30 p.m. at the Pilot Center at 612 East Main Street in Pilot Mountain, according to the Stokes News.

Valerie Oberle will outline business tips and techniques and will talk about her 27-year career with Walt Disney World, the paper reported.

The seminar topics will include understanding the impact of tourism and learning seven ways to analyze and improve your current customer experience.

Mount Airy City Schools Interim Superintendent Selected

Dr. Charles Morris will serve as interim superintendent of the Mount Airy City Schools starting July 1, according to school officials.

Morris will hold the position until a permanent superintendent is selected. He will replace Dr. Darrin Hartness left to become the superintendent for Davie County Schools.

Hartness's new position becomes effective July 1. He announced last month that he had accepted the position.

The Mount Airy City Board of Education approved Morris' appointment Thursday. Morris has served as superintendent of the Mount Airy City Schools from 1991-95.

SCC to receive job training grant

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) - Officials from Duke Energy will officially present a 250,000 dollar grant to Surry Community College on Friday, June 24. 

The grant supports the school’s efforts to provide workforce training in advanced manufacturing.  It will be used for purchasing equipment to establish state-of-the-art training labs at SCC’s Elkin and Pilot centers.

Surry County Schools Names Bus Driver of the Year

Surry County Schools bus driver Larry Wall recently received the school system's 2010-2011 School Bus Driver of the Year award.

Wall, 35, was presented with a plaque and a model school bus bearing Wall’s bus number, according to the Mount Airy News.

“I’m emotional about it,” Wall said, according to the paper. “It’s an honor to be selected.”

Wall has been a school bus driver since 1975. He drives about 175 miles a day, the longest route in the school system, the paper reported.

He drives middle and high school students in the east district and Surry Early College High School of Design students from the east district to Surry Community College.

Hardy said Wall has achieved near perfect attendance and an accident-free driving record since starting at Surry County Schools.

There are 120 bus drivers for Surry County Schools and Wall was selected driver of the year out of 17 nominees, the paper reported.

Students Earn Thousands in the Stock Market

Two Millennium Charter Academy middle school students recently earned $12,000 in the stock market, according to the Mount Airy News.

Josh Stevens and Alex Handy invested for six weeks in companies such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonalds, Under Armor and Abercrombie and Fitch, the paper reported.

The pair participated in an online stock market game through economics and the stock market elective at MCA.

Stevens and Handy finished third in the middle school division in the Piedmont region in the game, the paper reported.

Student Art to be Displayed in Mount Airy

Student Art to be Displayed in Mount Airy

Mount Airy High School's annual art show is now open to the public until June 3, according to the Mount Airy News.

About 250 pieces of students art will be displayed in the school's halls from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, the paper reported.

The art show features drawings, paintings, multimedia presentations, photographs and an evening gown.

The art comes from a wide variety of skill levels, from beginners to advanced students, the paper reported.

To visit the art show, check in at the front office of the school for a visitor's pass before venturing down to the bottom floor of the school.

Mount Airy High School is located at 1011 N. South St. in Mount Airy.

Surry Teacher Headed to Washington, D.C. for Educational Program

A North Surry High School teacher has been selected to attend a special program in Washington, D.C. related to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Eric Jessup of Mount Airy has been selected for the Supreme Court Summer Institute to be held in June, according to the Mount Airy News.

Jessup was one of 60 teachers chosen after a “highly competitive” application process, according to officials of the program.

The teacher plans to learn about the judicial branch of the government through his upcoming participation in the program.

He said he will apply the program's insights about the federal government’s legislative functions into his own classroom teachings.
