Nearly 6 lbs. of pot seized from Mount Airy home

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A Mount Airy man was arrested after police said they found nearly six pounds of marijuana in his home.

Jeffrey Dewayne McHone was arrested after police and deputies received consent to search his home at 133 Bluff St., according to a news release from the Mount Airy Police Department.  Police did not say when the search took place.

Before the search, police said undercover detectives purchased marijuana from McHone on multiple occasions.

Between the undercover purchases and the search of the suspect’s home, police said investigators seized about 5 3/4 lbs. of pot along with an undisclosed number of guns and cash.

Charges against McHone include multiple counts each of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, selling and delivering marijuana, possession with intent to sell marijuana, manufacturing marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for drugs, and maintaining a vehicle for drugs.

Mount Airy woman dies in crash near home

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A Mount Airy woman died Tuesday after her vehicle went down a steep embankment and hit a tree, but her Jeep was hidden by the vegetation and it took four to five hours for anyone to find her, according to Mount Airy police.

Lisa Michelle McCraw, 23, was dead when officers arrived, said Det. Vanessa Vaught.

The accident happened on Circle Drive, in a residential area not far from McCraw’s home.

Police estimate McCraw lost control of her 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about 3:30 or 4:30 a.m., went off the right side of the road, hit a utility pole wire and went down the embankment, Vaught said.

“The only reason anybody noticed anything is there was a power line that dropped down,” she said. A resident notified police about the sagging power line, and an officer noticed tire tracks leading into the vegetation.

Youngest NC voters can’t cast ballot on Amendment One

RALEIGH, N.C. — Some of North Carolina’s youngest voters are getting a chance to pick candidates for November’s general election, but they won’t be able to vote on the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

State elections director Gary Bartlett said Tuesday that officials have received less than a dozen complaints across the state from 17-year-old voters angry they did not get to vote on the marriage ban.

State law allows 17-year-olds to vote in primaries as long as they will be 18 by the general election in November. But Bartlett said those voters cannot cast a ballot on the amendment because that issue is being decided Tuesday.

Moderate turnout as voters decide on candidates, Amendment One

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina voting officials say turnout picked up in the final hours before the polls close in primaries across the state.

State elections director Gary Bartlett said Tuesday evening that turnout increased in the afternoon, especially in the mountains after the rain moved out of the eastern part of the state.

Bartlett says he thinks turnout could top the 37 percent that voted in the 2008 elections.

Bartlett says it has been a smooth day for voters overall and few problems have been reported.

A constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage is driving turnout, but North Carolina voters also are choosing nominees for governor, 13 congressional districts, nine of the 10 Council of State positions and dozens of General Assembly seats.

Polls closed at 7:30 p.m.

Suspect dies in Dobson double shooting

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — More details were released Friday about a deadly double shooting that took place Thursday night in Dobson.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said deputies responded to a call for help at 641 Cave Road shortly after 8:30 p.m.

When deputies knocked on the door of the home, Atkinson said the suspect, a 53-year-old man, answered “Be with you in a minute,” but did not let them inside.

Atkinson said a deputy then looked through a window and saw the man, who was holding a .38-caliber handgun in front of a bed where the victim, 62-year-old Margaret Coe Dixon, was sitting.

Deputies continued to try talking with the suspect until the lights in the home suddenly went dark, Atkinson said.

Immediately afterward, Dixon’s son ran out of the home and was “secured by deputies,” Atkinson said.

Moments after Dixon’s son ran outside, Atkinson said two gunshots were heard.
