Mount Airy Library to Host Free Theatre Camp

The Mount Airy Public Library will host a free drama camp for kids from Aug. 1-5 at 1 p.m. each day.

The camp is open to children ages 7 and up. Each day’s session should last at least an hour, officials said, according to the Mount Airy News.

The sessions will provide an opportunity for youth to determine whether or not they would like to pursue theater work, the paper reported.

Participants will play theater games to get used to standing up in front of people during the camp, officials said.

They will also study theatre scenes and learn to act emotionally, the paper reported. Preregistration is not required.

First Surry Hand N Hand Car Show Called a Success

The first-ever Surry Hand N Hand car show in Pilot Mountain Saturday has been deemed a success, according to the Mount Airy News.

A reported 278 cars and trucks turned out and about $8,000 to $10,000 was raised. Officials said half of the money raised will go to the Cardinal Little League Foundation.

“This was the biggest car show I’ve ever had. It was wild considering the rain we had the night before,” said Edd Lindley, president of Surry Hand N Hand, according to the paper.

Lindley said people came from as far away as Danville, Va., and Fort Mill, S.C. The paper did not say whether or not a second event is being planned.

'International Fiesta Day' Coming to Mount Airy Saturday

"International Fiesta Day," takes place takes place from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy.

The event is a celebration of different cultures and will feature food from across the globe, music, dancing and games. It is free and open to the public.

Some of the food will include Mexican, Thai, East Indian, Chinese, African-American and Italian, according to the Mount Airy News. Lugo Fonda, Trio, Coppola's, Asia House and Thailand Cafe are among the participating restaurants.

Mount Airy mayor Deborah Cochran will give opening remarks at the event and Jessica Icenhour, tourism director for the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, will be in charge of the door prizes.

Mount Airy Clubs to Host City Fireworks Display

Local club members are bringing a public fireworks display during the Fourth of July to Mount Airy, according to the Mount Airy News.

The Surry Sunrise and Mount Airy Rotary clubs have announced their joint sponsorship of an annual community fireworks show at Veterans Memorial Park on West Lebanon Street at dusk on July 4.

The event is free and open to the public. Music will be provided by The Klassix Band. Food and beverages will also be available.

Rotary volunteers raised more than $1,600 for a Surry food pantry and the Veterans in Distress effort, the paper reported.

Mount Airy Museum Receives New Logo and Website

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History recently launched a new logo and website, according to the Mount Airy News.

Officials said it was time for a fresh change to the museum's appearance after being open to the public for 16 years.

"Over the course of the past couple of years, we’ve been working to make the museum a more active part of the community," said Matt Edwards, executive director of the museum, according to the paper.

A clock tower now serves as the museum's logo. Officials said the new website is easier to use and is integrated with smart phones.

The museum is open Mondays through Saturdays in June from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tickets for their newest program, Historic Mount Airy Ghost Tours, are available for purchase online at www.hauntedmayberry.com.

Mount Airy Fourth of July Parade Participants Wanted

The Mount Airy Downtown Business Association is looking for participants for the city's Fourth of July parade this year.

The parade leaves Veterans Park at 1 p.m. July 4, according to the Mount Airy News.

Festivities begin downtown at 12 p.m. with a reading of “The Declaration of Independence” by Ben Franklin at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.

There will be face painting, animal balloons, and a corn hole tournament. Music and fireworks take place later in the evening. The gates open at 5 p.m.

There is no fee for non-profit participants. The fee for businesses entries, including those pulling non-profits is $25.

Applications are available at Mayberry Consignments and Mount Airy Tractor Toyland on Main Street and can be returned there or mailed to P.O. Box 535, Mount Airy. The deadline for applications is June 24.

Relay for Life of Surry-Mount Airy Starts Friday

Relay for Life of Surry-Mount Airy Starts Friday

The 2011 Relay for Life of Surry-Mount Airy takes place from 6 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday at Mount Airy High School.

Hundreds of people plan to walk during the event in an effort to raise money for cancer research, according to the Mount Airy News.

Participants will be in teams and each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times.

Live music, food, activities and an awards ceremony will be included, the paper reported.

More than $54,000 has been raised as of Wednesday and 39 teams have signed up. The event raised $106,792 last year.
