Tour de Gaps Bicycling Event Takes Place Saturday

The Tour de Gaps annual bicycling event takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday at 8 a.m. at Westwood Park in Mount Airy.

The event is a charity bicycle ride with the option of climbing up four of the gaps to the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to the Mount Airy News.

Both 50- and 82-mile routes are available, the paper reported. The long route includes Squirrel Spur, Willis Gap, Orchard Gap and Pipers Gap.

The cyclist climbs up each gap road and returns back down the same route to the rolling terrain of the foothills.

Officials say more than 200 people are expected to participate. Proceeds will benefit charities including the Surry Medical Ministries.

Registration is done at www.tourdegaps.com for $35 through Tuesday. The early registration fee includes a shirt and goodie bag.

Registration also will be available at Westwood Park on the morning of the event for a $40 fee, the paper reported.

Mount Airy Ghosts Tours Off to a Good Start

The Historic Mount Airy Ghost Tours that began in June are off to a great start and have been selling out almost every weekend.

Since the tour began June 17, nearly 400 people have taken it, according to the Mount Airy News.

The tours are on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. leaving from the Old North State Winery. They cost $10 per person.

The event is described as a 90-minute, latern-lit walk, featuring some of Mount Airy's "final" resting places.

Jimmie Van Zant to Perform in Mount Airy Saturday

Southern rocker Jimmie Van Zant will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy, according to the Mount Airy News.

Jimmie Van Zant is the cousin of Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the cousin of Donnie Van Zant of .38 Special.

Van Zant will play a mixture of his own band's material and several favorites from others, the paper reported.

“I try to mix it up a little bit, but I try to keep the family heritage,” Van Zant said, according to the paper. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Tickets are $10 at the door and also available at B-52’s and Mount Airy Yamaha.

Mount Airy Library to Host Free Theatre Camp

Mount Airy Library to Host Free Theatre Camp

The Mount Airy Public Library will host a free drama camp for kids from Aug. 1-5 at 1 p.m. each day.

The camp is open to children ages 7 and up. Each day’s session should last at least an hour, officials said, according to the Mount Airy News.

The sessions will provide an opportunity for youth to determine whether or not they would like to pursue theater work, the paper reported.

Participants will play theater games to get used to standing up in front of people during the camp, officials said.

They will also study theatre scenes and learn to act emotionally, the paper reported. Preregistration is not required.

Lightning Causes Damage to Mount Airy Museum

Parts of the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History were damaged by lightning Tuesday evening, according to the Mount Airy News.

Two different parts of the museum’s motion sensors were blown and the fire alarm was totally destroyed, the paper reported.

The museum is still open for business, but still has issues to be resolved, according to the paper.

The lightning also temporarily shut down the museum's computer system at about 6 p.m. The elevators have also stopped working and were down as of Wednesday morning.

Executive Museum Director Matt Edwards' computer no longer works and the internet was reportedly fried.

Most of the damage at the museum is covered by insurance, although there is a $1,000 deductible, the Mount Airy News reported.

Surry County Artist Donates Sculpture to Governor

Surry County sculptor B. Maxwell Jackson donated a piece of artwork to North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue Monday, according to the Mount Airy News.

The piece is called "Best Friends." It is a sculpture of Jackson's first wife sitting down with a pet cat on her lap.

The work of art was donated to the governor’s western North Carolina residence, the paper reported.

Officials say the governor is thankful for the sculpture.

First Surry Hand N Hand Car Show Called a Success

The first-ever Surry Hand N Hand car show in Pilot Mountain Saturday has been deemed a success, according to the Mount Airy News.

A reported 278 cars and trucks turned out and about $8,000 to $10,000 was raised. Officials said half of the money raised will go to the Cardinal Little League Foundation.

“This was the biggest car show I’ve ever had. It was wild considering the rain we had the night before,” said Edd Lindley, president of Surry Hand N Hand, according to the paper.

Lindley said people came from as far away as Danville, Va., and Fort Mill, S.C. The paper did not say whether or not a second event is being planned.
